Let's create a Points of Light character!

This week I'll continue my character creation series, continuing the series of Borg-like games characters made for a future project of mine. These will be alternating with other kinds of posts, like my solo campaigns recaps and some gameable content coming from my Duet Pirate Borg home game.

This time we're going with Points of Light by Dayle Grixti, a Borg hack that is even closer than Mork Manual to the B/X origins of Mork Borg, with less doomed world and more classic fantasy; I find this to be a very interesting and inspiring take. Without further ado, let's get into it!

1. First of all we roll for our ABILITIES, using the traditional 3d6 in order method:
-Strength: 14 => +1
-Agility: 13 => +1
-Toughness: 14 => +1
-Presence: 10 => 0
-Intelligence: 8 => -1
Not a bad series of rolls! The game allows us to then swap to if we want, but I think I'll leave mine as they were rolled;

2. Next we pick our ANCESTRY and CLASS. In the rulebook there are 5 ancestries and 12 classes, so I'll roll for them. Let's see what the dice want for our character:
-Ancestry, d5: 5, Human (which gives us +1 to an ability of our choice; I'll pick STR)
-Class, d12: 6, Fighter (which gives us +1 to STR and -1 to AGI plus a couple of features that will make us more effective in battle, specifically -2 DR to attacks and the ability to redirect excess damage from a dead enemy to another one in range)
So our PC will be a Human Fighter...basic, much?

3. Now we pick our SKILL PROFICIENCIES, which add +2 to a roll when relevant. They can be made up, but there are 16 listed, so I can roll a d44 to pick mine. Let's see: we get a number equal to INT+2 (min 1), so...1. Better than nothing, I guess. Let's roll for it: 12, Athletics. It looks like this PC does one thing, but does it very well!

4. Let's add a few more STARTING THINGS to our PC:
-Gold, 3d6x10: 60 gold
-HP, based on class: in our case 8+TOU= 9 HP
-Boons (this game's Omens): 2, this is a fixed number;

5. We're almost done, now we write down our STARTING GEAR, once again based on class:
-A melee weapon (it doesn't matter which, the damage die is based on class in this game: 1d8 for us), for which I'll pick a trident for a gladiator feel
-Chainmail armor (-1d4 damage)
-A shield (-1 damage);

6. Lastly, we have to choose a NAME for this character. This book doesn't have a table, so I'll pick one myself: Garra (which I realized after picking comes from a 5e adventure...but it sounds cool).

And here we are! This is another Borg hack without much to roll on for the background and story hooks for your character, but I still think it will be interesting to play...despite being a Human Fighter. But hey, they're a classic for a reason, aren't they?

This is all for this week, see you next Sunday for my next post!

May your dice never betray you,
Kirhon
