Caribbean Tales (solo Pirate Borg) - Episode 12

The following is part 12 of my solo Pirate Borg campaign. It focuses mainly around the character I created in this post, which was so interesting to me that it prompted me to set up a whole solo campaign. You can start with episode 1 here. Let's dive right in!

They weren't kidding, in those days Sam had to work harder than he ever did while in the Navy. It felt different, though, because on his previous ship there was a strict hierarchical order and it was difficult to get along with your superiors, while on The Shriek everyone, captain included, was always willing to have a word with him or share a joke...as long as the Rules were followed.
The voyage to Havana was mostly uneventful, save for one instance.
One morning, shortly after dawn, Brother Bilge, who was on the crow's nest (he was surprisingly agile for his age), told Bones, who was at the helm at that time, Watch out, there's a field of flotsam ahead of us, turn to port!
The rest of the crew immediately went to check the flotsam: Sam was curious about who battled in that part of the Caribbean, while others seemed to mostly be looking for potential loot. Those people were disappointed, though, because there didn't seem to be any. The wreckage itself was quite interesting, though, at least for Sam.
One of the ships had kraken tentacles painted on its flag, marking it as a vessel of the Wretched, the apocalyptic cultists that had been on the rise recently around the Dark Caribbeans. The other one, though, seemed to be very peculiar: it was hard to tell now that it was in pieces, but the markings on what remained of its side were in a weird language he had never seen before. They were kind of...unsettling.
Captain Ramirez's voice startled Sam. Have you ever seen symbols like that before?
-No, Captain. Never. They seem to have some kind of...power, though. Or maybe I'm just imagining things.
-No, you're right. These waters are full of mysteries most people don't even suspect. And I'm not sure I want to solve them; not all of them, at least.
As she said that last sentenceSam noticed, her eyes seemed to wander to her left, towards the open sea; she seemed to be lost in deep thoughts. Unless...
Could it be?
A suspicion formed in his mind, but before he could give voice to it he was anticipated by Bilge's scream: French frigate from starboard, coming towards our position! And they look very well armed!
The Captain immediately spun on her heels and started barking orders: There's nothing worth fighting for here. Disengage! Let's get away from them, then set the most direct route to Havana.
Sam's eyes wandered toward Catherine for a moment,, then he let out a deep sigh. His chance of finding out whether his suspicions were true had just slipped. Maybe another time.
If the French vessel spotted them, they didn't show it; they seemed focused on the flotsam instead, and stopped to check it. Better for them.

This is it for this episode, I hope you enjoyed it! I'll continue in the near future.
See you next Sunday for my next post!

May your dice never betray you,
Kirhon
