Let's create a forest with Cairn 2e - part 3

It's time to return to the forest I created using Cairn 2e's Warden's Guide generator a few weeks ago and continue to expand it, weaving the various results together to make it interesting to play in. Let's continue where we left off.

In area 2 (the toxic spores area with watchful dead), deep within a field of rotten mushrooms is hidden a Mirror, a magical artifact that allows communication with deceased people...at a cost: whoever uses it becomes the new guardian of the Mirror (a wight). Stepping on the mushrooms requires a successful save (STR in Cairn, CON in D&D and the like) to prevent being poisoned for 24 hours; submerging oneself in running water cures the poison [A river should be added in some other part of the forest, to offer a way to get rid of the poison].
The wight will attack anyone that touches the Mirror which, to be used, has to be in a place where "the Veil between worlds is thin" (area 3). The Elves know all this (it's an Elven artifact) and want to retrieve it but not use it, but they don't want to kill the wight, as it used to be one of them. They'd be ok with defeating a different wight, though, so they tell the PCs about the mirror omitting the fact you die upon using it...or if you prefer them to not be evil, you can ignore the wight being one of the Elves and they might not know about the consequence of using the Mirror.
The thinned Veil has led to a growing number of undead populating the forest, but they only attack mortals; pixie dust allows a mortal to not be attacked by them.

Area 3 (the abandoned manor where the Veil between worlds is thin) will be a dungeon within the forest.
Many decades ago this was the residence of a powerful (Elven?) wizard, a renowned researcher. He hid here to study necromancy, but no one knew that. One day, one of his experiments yielded an amazing result: he created the Mirror of the Veil, an artifact that allows communication with deceased people...but then takes the life of the user. Notes from the wizard will be present across the dungeon, hinting at his research and possibly at the fate of the wizard.
Creating this dungeon is something I've not done yet, but I plan to; when that happens, you'll see it here.

We are not done yet, a couple of areas still need to be defined. There will be a part 4 of this forest coming up in about 3 weeks. Stay tuned!

This is all for this week, see you next Sunday for my next post!

May your dice never betray you,
Kirhon
