Let's create a Ronin character!

This week I'll continue my character creation series, continuing the series of Borg-like games characters made for a future project of mine. These will be alternating with other kinds of posts, like my solo campaigns recaps and some gameable content coming from my Duet Pirate Borg home game.

This time we're going with Ronin, a Borg hack set in an alternate reality version of feudal Japan, of which you can find a Barebones version for free here. Let's begin!

1. We start by rolling our CLASS, d10: 10, Sword Saint, a master of duels;

2. Then we roll our ABILITIES, incorporating the class modifiers:
-  Swiftness: 12+2=14, +1;
Spirit: 13-1=12, +0;
Vigor: 13+2=15, +2;
Resilience: 14+1=15, +2;

3. The last ability is HONOUR, but it works a bit differently: we roll 3d6 (modified by the class, in our case +1) and we keep this score as is; under 10 our character is considered Dishonourable, while a result above 10 defines a Honourable character. This influences how NPCs react to our character, and can be gained or lost during gameplay depending on how our character behaves.
We rolled our 3d6 and got...5, +1 from our class giving us a total of 6. Great;

4. Next we roll for our Class' TALENT, d6: 3, Blade's Spirit, which allows us to, once per session, pour our spirit into a strike, adding our Honour score to a damage roll;

5. We take note of our class' TENETS, its honour code we should follow if we want to improve our Honour score and be the best Sword Saint we can be: The Sword Saint's Discipline asks us to practice Precision, Mastery, DisciplineValourRespect and Legacy.

6. Now we roll for a few more things:
HP, Resilience+d8: 2+6 = 8;
Virtues (this game's Omens), d2: 1;
Starting money, 1d6x10=40 ryo;
Water & Food, 1d4 each: 4 water and 3 food;

7. Let's see what our EQUIPMENT will be:
- Our class lets us start with a worn armour (tier 3, which means -d6 damage but +4 DR on all Swiftness tests and +2 DR on defence rolls) and an Odachi (a d10 damage greatsword);
- A container, d6: 3, Backpack (can hold up to 7 small items);
- An item, d12: 1, 30 ft of rope;
- A second weapon, d10: 10, a katana (d10 damage);

8. It's now time to flesh out our character with a few OPTIONAL TABLES:
Broken Bodies, d20: 18, Chronic skin conditions, leaving skin flaky or weeping;
Grim Chronicles, d20: 7, Have a shadowy past that is slowly catching up with you;
Bad Habits, d20: 15, Telling overly long and irrelevant tales in conversation;
Awful Afflictions, d20: 14, Aggressive;

9. Last but not least, we need a NAME, for which we roll a d20 3 times:
First Name: 3, Eiko;
Last Name: 12, Uesugi;
Nickname: 6, Kaze no Kensei / Sword Saint of the Wind, very fitting!

And here we are! Thanks to the optional tables, it's not going to be difficult to come up with a story hook for this dishonourable character fleeing from their shadowy past.

This is all for this week, see you next Sunday for my next post!

May your dice never betray you,
Kirhon
