Let's create a Treasure Map with Pirate Borg!
In my Duet Pirate Borg game my wife's character recently found a treasure map, so I headed to the Pirate Borg rulebook, specifically to the Treasure Map generator, to work on it.
1. Let's start with the TYPE OF MAP (d4): 3, Scavenger Hunt. Ok, so it'll be a multi-part hunt; I like it;
2. Next we roll for the MATERIAL the map is made of (d12): 8, Whittled into a bone or skull. This sounds very cool, but the PC already has the map, so it's better to keep it for the second piece of this scavenger hunt; for the starting map I'll go with 1, Parchment;
3. Now we need to establish the GEOGRAPHY of where our treasure is hidden (d8): 8, Inland. A land adventure, nice;
4. I'm not sure I'll actually use this part, but it was in the process, so I rolled it for fun: THE INVISIBLE INK IS REVEALED (d10): 5, If soaked in alcohol. Good to know;
5. It's time to roll for the COMPLICATION that will spice things up (d8): 8, There is so much treasure everyone becomes murderly paranoid. This sounds quite fun, but I don't think it suits what I'm going for, so I rerolled it: 1, Another crew is there when the PCs arrive. Perfect;
6. Another one I'm not entirely sure I'll use, but I rolled to be safe, is the CLUE CONTAINER (d10): 6, Letter in a small box;
7. We've finally reached the RIDDLE (d12): 12, [DIRECTION] of the [ICON] you'll find a sight rarely seen, find the [MARKER] that's hidden under a blanket of green. All the words in [brackets] have a separate table to roll on, let's do that:
- Direction (d8): 3, East;
- Icon (d20): 8, Whale graveyard;
- Marker (d20): 9, Cannonball;
Considering the next riddle is supposed to be whittled on a skull or something similar (based on our earlier roll) I think our next RIDDLE could be inscribed directly on the cannonball itself: 3, Find the [MARKER] by the [ICON], ye soothsayers and witches, for only magic or prayers can lead to these riches. Once again, let's roll for the words in [brackets]:
- Marker (d20): 8, Painted rock;
- Icon (d20): 15, Cliff side;
8. All that remains is to choose what our BURIED TREASURE will be: there is a handy d100 table in the book, but I wanted to choose something interesting and that could inspire more adventures. Initially I went with half of a metal medallion, with the idea that the other half will be found somewhere else, but then I changed my mind and decided to go with a special coin that will serve as a map/clue to a following adventure, specifically The treasure of Cutlass Cay by Steven Gibbs.
The next steps are to generate the island itself where this treasure will be found, and the special coin which will be found (maybe along with a map to Cutlass Cay), but those will be the subject of a future post. For now, we'll stop here.
Have you ever used this generator yourself? Or maybe this post inspired you to try it? Let me know! And obviously feel free to use this treasure map in your own game (be it Pirate Borg or any other game).
This is all for this week, see you next Sunday for my next post!
May your dice never betray you,
Kirhon
