My next campaign project
Lately my wife has been obsessed, like millions around the world, with Hollow Knight: Silksong. It's a beautiful game, and I look forward to playing it when I eventually finish Hollow Knight first (if I find the time for it!).
A couple of weeks ago she found on Instagram this 5e subclass inspired by that game, and that immediately sparked an idea in my mind: a Duet campaign where she would get to play a character with that subclass, to merge two of her favorite hobbies...and mine too, which doesn't hurt.
The game system will need to be 5e, obviously, and my idea is to not even try to follow the plot of the game of anything like that, it would take too much tweaking; instead, I'm going to create a world which her character would be able to explore freely, and make its own story. It's still a work in progress, but by brainstorming with her so far I've come up with a Monastery, the home of the "Weavers", who are the ones who managed to perfect the art of turning the weave of magic into a physical weapon they can wield in combat. And over the generations the cats who have always lived around that temple, affected by this magic, have turned humanoid, creating a hybrid race called Threadlings: she wants to play a Tabaxi, a cat-like humanoid race, and we agreed that it will be a mostly human-centric world, so we came up with this in-world explanation. Was the transformation of those cats into Threadlings really natural, or was it the product of some kind of experiment? We don't know yet!
Just because it'll be a 5e game, though, doesn't mean I can't sprinkle a bit of old-school here and there in it: shortly after coming up with the campaign idea I decided to make it a sandbox with emergent storytelling, where level ups are diegetic and don't just happen when the DM decides but after the character has undergone some kind of training to acquire the new power (something I can implement best because it's a Duet game and I can focus specifically on her character) and to use the amazing Worldbuilding section of Cairn 2e's Warden's Guide: I'll use it to create a Realm, a few factions and also a good number of dungeons and/or forests to populate said Realm. Look forward to some examples of those creations in the coming weeks, among other posts.
What do you think of this idea? Have you ever done anything like this? If you have any opinions, comments or suggestions I'd be happy to hear them.
This is all for this week, see you next Sunday for my next post!
