The Abandoned Tower - Part 3 - Labyrinth Lord Solo Adventure

This week I continue with the recap of my Labyrinth Lord solo adventure, starring Darien the Elf. This is the third of the six sessions that took me to complete this adventure; if you haven't yet, you can check out part 1 here. Enjoy!

THE ABANDONED TOWER

 Part 3

The door appears to be in surprisingly good conditions, but as Darien pushes it open it squeaks loudly. Darien freezes for a moment, but no sound comes from the other side; he looks and finds out it's because it's just a 10x10 feet square room with another door on the other side.
He tries to open this second door more cautiously, but it squeaks just as loud as the first one: Darien stops again, then slowly enters the room when silence isn't broken for a few moments [1 in 1d6 chances of random encounter: 4, no] and it does indeed seem that this one is empty, for a change. A burnt-out torch stands against the right-hand wall, and a rivulet of water runs down that wall, across the room and down the stairs ahead and to his left. On the right end of the far wall, set in the back of an alcove, a door presents itself as an alternative to those stairs. Which way to go? [odds for door/evens for stairs on a d20: 9, door]

Darien decides to check the door, so he approaches it [1-2 on 1d6 to trigger the pit trap: 2! - Save vs Death Ray: 10+1 DEX as per the book = 11, fail by 1! - 1d6 fall damage: 5 = 1 damage], but suddenly the floor disappears from under his feet! He falls 10 feet to the bottom of the pit despite almost grabbing the edge, but in doing so he smacks his shoulder against the side of the pit itself; while checking that it's not broken he looks around and notices, scattered on the floor, the skeletal remains of someone less lucky than him, maybe another adventurer. The light of his torch reflects on a few possessions of that unfortunate soul: some coins, a chainmail armor, a shortsword and a dagger. The latter looks quite rusty, but the sword and the armor look as if they had just been dropped there: sadly the armor would be too heavy to carry out (and he's not so careless as to just switch armor without knowing where it comes from), so he grabs the coins and the sword [getting 18 gp, 5 pp and a shortsword +1, but leaving the chainmail +1], making a mental note to come back for the armor if there ever is the chance, and tries to find a way out of the pit.

He tries to climb his way out [the book doesn't say anything about the pit walls, so I'll give him a chance. DEX check: 11, success] and with a bit of struggle he manages; shortly after, while he's bandaging his shoulder [recovering the 1 damage from the fall] the trapdoor closes itself again. The worst part? Now that he's carefully gone around it and reached the door, Darien discovers it to be a fake door!

Oh well, at least he got some treasure from it.

Now there's only one way to go, down the stairs [unless he decides to go back and check the room he skipped; unlikely, 1 on 1d6: 5, no], so Darien, torch in one hand and longsword in the other, makes his way deeper underground.

This concludes the first of the two levels of this dungeon. In part 4, coming in the near future, Darien will start exploring the second one. Stay tuned!

This is all for this week, see you next Sunday for my next post!
May your dice never betray you,
Kirhon
