Let's create a Mausritter character!

This week, to add to my series of character creation posts (which started a few weeks ago with a Cairn 2e character), I'll make a Mausritter character. This is a game derived from Into the Odd like Cairn, with which it shares some similarities. The main difference from it (and most other OSR or D&D TTRPG) is that in this game we play as mice, and all adventures are mouse-sized; therefore, where in a traditional game a fearsome enemy might be a dragon, Mausritter would have a cat for example. It's been praised for being very good for kids and for first time players, because it's easier to imagine a mouse facing a cat than it is to picture a man facing a floating eyeball monster full of tentacles; I can see that, honestly.

1. First let's generate the ATTRIBUTES (STR, DEX and WIL, just like Cairn) by rolling 3d6 and keeping the highest 2, which will usually mean a lower score than Cairn:
- 6, 3, 1 for 9;
- 5, 3, 3 for 8;
- 6, 4, 1 for 10.
The attributes are rolled in order, then we can swap two of them; since I don't have a specific character in mind and they're pretty close I'll keep them as they were rolled.

2. Next we roll 1d6 for the HP (4), another 1d6 for the starting PIPS, this game's currency (2), then we cross reference these two numbers on a table in the rulebook to discover our character's BACKGROUNDWorm wrangler. Uh, peculiar.

3. Now we fill up our INVENTORY: we start with TorchesRations, two items from the background (a 6" pole and Soap) and a weapon of our choice: after quickly scanning the other backgrounds I'll pick a Needle, a light weapon which does d6 damage, because it feels very flavourful.
In case a character rolls poorly on their attributes they get extra items, but we were lucky.

4. Last, to complete our brave mouse adventurer, we roll for a few details:
- d6 for the BIRTHSIGN: 2, Wheel, which means and Industrious but Unimaginative disposition;
- d6 twice for the COAT and PATTERN: 1 and 6, for Chocolate and Flecked;
- d66 for a PHYSICAL DETAIL: 22, Foreign Clothes.

We now only need a NAME, and luckily there's a table for this too! We roll a d100 for the Birthname and a d20 for the Matriname: 15 and 3, Dahlia Buckthorne.

And we're done! This was a very fast and simple character creation, as it usually is with Oddlike games, but I like the feeling of this game. I hope I'll be able to run it some day, either for a solo game or (hopefully) with a table of players.
Have you heard of this game before? Have you played or run it? If you have, I'd like to hear about your experience.

This is all for this week, see you next Sunday for my next post!

May your dice never betray you,
Kirhon
